The Bridge on the River Kwai, Thailand
Caption
The famous bridge on the River Kwai. Known as "Death Railway", it was made during WWII by the Japanese for transporting war supplies. Around 160,000 forced laborers (including civilians from the surrounding areas) lost their lives in the brutal conditions forced on them.
Later in the war, the allies made several attemts to destroy the bridge to prevent its use by the Japanese army. They eventually succeeded, cutting off one of their main supply routes. The squarish sections in the middle were later supplied to Thailand by Japan after the war as part of the war reparations.
The original size is 1920x1200, which I sized deliberately for use on widescreen monitors as a background.
